Meta removes terms language that experts read as allowing AI training on scraped sites

Meta had consolidated its commercial terms with a line saying it "may use any content from such domains, web pages, or URLs" to develop and train its products. Legal experts quoted by Nieman Lab read that as a way around robots.txt. After the backlash, Meta removed the sentence. A spokesperson told The Verge the crawling terms "only applied to our ads and business products", that nothing changes in how Meta crawls, and that site owners can keep using robots.txt to signal their preferences.

Why it matters for small sites: robots.txt remains the switch you control. Check which AI crawlers your own robots.txt allows.
